Eye/portrait sketches

Hey guys. It's been a while, but until I have a hosted portfolio done, I'll be using Blogspot to organize my art.

On the left are a few eyes I sketched up in Photoshop using references some friends on Allan's forum gave me. I'm trying to work on drawing faster, but I don't want all my characters' eyes looking the same, so I figured I'd practice a little bit before simplifying them.

On the right is just a sheet of some quick portraits; I didn't really have any sort of people in mind, I just sketched as fast as I could and let them turn out how they wanted to.

Most of this is for comics, because I'm kind of tired of spending 6 hours on a four-panel thing... so. We'll see how that goes from now on.

So I haven't updated this in a while, but I have a couple new things that I thought I'd share. This on the left is a commission I did for someone; it's his World of Warcraft character (Cakedream, for those who were wondering. I forget what realm he's on, though.) He paid money for this so don't steal it. If you do, I'll cry a lot.

Anyway, he was drawn with pencil on sketchbook paper, since it was originally supposed to be a two hour sketch... but... eight or so hours later... ya know.

I wanted this to be really good, seeing as how it was my first real commission, so for the first time in forever, I took great care not to smudge it. Sketched it with 4H pencil, went over and put in the details with 4B. It took a lot of time but all in all it was fun.

When my mom closed her second ice cream shop, the one I slaved in as an assistant manager for three months, she had a couple things that she didn't need anymore. One of these things was a giant bulletin board. So I had the great idea to gesso it and paint something on top of it, leaving half of it blank so I might actually be able to use it.

Before I moved out of the house I was living in last year, I utilized the garage space for gessoing. That took a couple days, because this thing needed around 6 thick coats of the stuff. So I got that done.

Then I procrastinated some.

When I got to my new apartment in August, I painted the red part.

Then I procrastinated some more.

But recently I realized how drab and boring my apartment was. I needed a change. Badly. So I used some acrylic additive to make the white transparent, and brushed it with some texture (brush, scrape away with the bristles, repeat). Then I painted the flowers. White went on first. These are actually my favorite part because I used this pearl paint I had from a long time ago, put that over white, and now it shines. Then I did the big orange plum blossoms. Finally the branches. I was actually surprised with my ability to do these with no reference... also, I mixed some of the pearl into the yellow because I love it so much.

So here's what my main room looks like now! <3 I'm so much happier living here without a big fat white wall staring at me all the time.

Now I just need to get some more art from people, and print out Chris' posters for my room, and I'll be g2g!

If you're wondering what I do at work, this is an example. :D

Some random stuff I found on my computer

"Red"

"Misty Wishes to Battle"

Untitled Sketch

"Fire and Ice"

"Chewing Blood"

All of these were done with a tablet in Photoshop. This last one was a commission for a friend who wrote a song of the same title. He asked me to draw what I thought of when I listened to the song. So here it is.

The band's name is mwanza. You should check them out (on myspace)

21

There's a better picture of this somewhere, and I've since edited it (filling in the swirly things with gray/white) but I wanted to post it anyway.

This thing is like... what... 60"x44" or something like that - I can barely carry it from end to end width-wise. The canvas was custom made by me, and mostly was painted last semester, December, with acrylics.

Honestly, this thing is the star in my portfolio. I love it. Of course, it's much more meaningful than most of my other pieces, so that might be why. I don't want to go into detail about that, because although some people are in the know, the mystery seems like one of the best parts of this.

Hooray!

I finally made something new! Well, there's another painting coming but I just finished it like... yesterday... so here's something until I get that up :)

This is for the Evergreen graphics/ad position; I figured to get a graphic design position I should prove that I can work with more than a paintbrush or pencil. It's just a fairly quick sketch, nothing too professional, but I was kind of excited to get some art finished for a change.

So yeah - photoshop, tablet (Dan's, since Kirby chewed through the cord of mine and I haven't fixed it yet), a couple hours. Let's hope those few hours is enough to land me a job!

-edit-

Heh... I just realized how well this one and the last piece I posted fit together... :P

Hey again. I know I haven't been posting a lot lately, but that's because I haven't been doing much lately... however, I decided to sit down and sketch on a piece of cardboard sitting under my desk and came up with this :D

I used some Faber Castell markers my mom got me for Christmas last year, and some white paint since I messed up in a couple places. The reference photo I used just for the shading was an Olay advertisement on the back of a copy of Cosmopolitan. Heh heh.

But yeah I think I'm going to use this for part of my drawing final (drawing images that I think of when I listen to certain songs), for "Out of my League" by Stephen Speaks.

Woooo!

Here's some actual stuff.

<-------------- That right thurr is a drawing we did in FA 321 (or 312... I get them mixed up), Advanced drawing. He set up a still life, and I picked one of the many static, uninteresting parts to work with and sketched it out. While walking around the room, though, I noticed that people were doing some really stylized stuff with their works, and I was so bored of the still life idea that I decided to follow suit. The iron and rag are realism, so I took the red from that and the green from the currently non-existent leaves (notice the niche in her shoulder?) and ran with it. Unfortunately, it's taking me a year and a half to finish this goddamn thing. Oh well. Teacher didn't care, I got credit for it :) My apple green pencil was obliterated, though, while the red stayed tall and strong. Must have been made with soft materials. This guy right here ---------------------->

... is from my other class, Intermediate Painting. Again, a still life, but paint is much faster, and this was about 1/3 of the size of the other. Not much to say about this one... I got tired of trying, since I realized that it was just supposed to be an exercise and not a full-fledged project, so that's why the ribbons look retarded. I'm kind of excited about the red thing, though - how you can see the ribbons and shadows from the inside.

Oh, and the green on the ball is some melty looking stuff that was on the still life. Not an accident!

The end.

Furry? :(

This is a logo design I sent into a company run by a friend of the family. They never responded, though, so if you see this thing on any merchandise... let me know.

I wasn't sure exactly what they wanted. They said a fox - that was their theme - and since they run a company that prints logos and pictures and whatnot on clothes, figured I'd put a sweet shirt on it.

Umm, another thing I tried to do is make it genderless, but with the pink background it definitely looks like the female fox in The Fox and the Hound. Whoops. Hope I don't get sued for copyright issues.

Oh well. Danosaur told me to put this up here since I don't have a lot of material yet. I did finish a painting for class today, though, so once I take my camera to the art department, I'll post that.

Hooray!
